The name originates from the earlier Dutch settlers that called the mountains the ‘Drakensbergen’ or ‘Mountains of Dragons’.
The Drakensberg Escarpment stretches over 1,000km from the Eastern Cape right up through Mpumalanga, and also forms a natural border between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. The highest peak in the Central Drakensberg is Champagne Castle (3,377 m / 11,079 S).
Cathkin Park, also affectionately known as ‘Champagne Valley’ is said to have received its name from a local climber that took a bottle of champagne up the mountains to celebrate his summit, only to drop the bottle on a rock by mistake, and thus the ‘Champagne Valley’ was born.
The surrounding area offers numerous hikes and tours, and a plethora of outdoor activities.
